Ray Jarvis completed his Bachelor's degree and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Western Australia in 1962 and 1968, respectively. After two years as a visiting Professor at Purdue University (Indiana, USA) he returned to the Australian National University and helped develop their Department of Computer Science. He took up a Chair in Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering at Monash University (Clayton Campus) in 1985 and established the Intelligent Robotics Research Centre in 1987, of which he is the Director. In 1992 he was elected as a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. His research interests include Computer Vision, Intelligent Robotics, Pattern Recognition, Image Processing and Computer Systems. He has served on many Commonwealth Government technical and granting committees, and has been Deputy Chairman of the Research Grants Committee of the Australian Research Council and Chair of the Earth, Engineering and Applied Sciences Panel of that body. He is about to take up the directorship of a new Australian Research Council Centre for Perceptive and Intelligent Machines in Complex Environments and is a governing board member of the International Foundation for Robotics Research.
